Insecurity is the main cause of concern for citizens across the country.
Kidnapping is one of the crimes that most affect people, an alarming reality that requires a deep understanding and effective prevention measures. Below, we explore the current situation of kidnappings in Mexico with recent data, statistics and some recommendations to minimize risks.
Current situation of kidnappings in Mexico
According to figures from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), nearly 7,000 kidnappings were reported throughout the country during the last six years. The states with the highest rates include Guerrero, Veracruz, the State of Mexico and Mexico City.
In June 2024 alone, the Alto al Secuestro organization recorded 90 kidnappings in the country.
In recent years, migrants on their way to the United States have also joined the list of "easy targets" for kidnappers, who take advantage of the vulnerability of these people to kidnap them for profit: the same NGO reported that, in March of this year alone, 262 migrants were kidnapped on their way to the United States , a figure much higher than that reported by the AMLO government.
Types of kidnapping
Kidnappings can be classified into various categories depending on the modus operandi and the length of time the victim is held:
1. Express kidnapping: Focuses on making a quick profit by using the victim's bank cards. It usually lasts a few hours.
2. Extortionate kidnapping: This is the longest-lasting type of kidnapping and seeks to obtain a larger amount of money as a ransom.
3. Virtual kidnapping: This is done without the need to physically detain the victim; the kidnappers deceive the family to obtain money.
Recent statistics on kidnappings in Mexico
To better understand the impact of kidnappings in Mexico, it is useful to analyze some recent statistics:
- Increase in kidnappings: According to Alto al Secuestro, in September 2023, 83 kidnappings were recorded, and in September 2024, 422 kidnappings , which means an alarming increase that should attract the attention of the authorities.
- Victim profiles: Although anyone can be a victim of kidnapping, some profiles tend to be at greater risk, such as powerful businessmen, children, adolescents and foreign migrants.
Prevention tips
1. Use safe transportation services and share as little information as possible: Avoid sharing sensitive information with drivers and always use transportation services that offer greater security. If you have a private driver, keep in mind that the vast majority of kidnappings are generated by the "tips" that people in your inner circle share with criminal organizations.
2. Keep a low profile on social media: Limiting the information you share publicly can reduce your risk of being targeted.
3. Strengthen security at home and at work : Electronic security systems, such as cell phone-connected cameras or professional monitoring services, offer an extra layer of protection and will keep you protected at least while you are at home or at work.
