Unmasking the Danger: Fake Security Companies in Mexico

Unmasking the Danger: Fake Security Companies in Mexico

In today’s Mexico, where security challenges are a constant concern (and are, in fact, the primary source of worry for most Mexican adults ), the demand for reliable security services has increased exponentially. However, amidst this legitimate need, a grim reality has also emerged: the proliferation of fake security companies.

These fraudulent entities, with some marketing and a lot of "smoke," present themselves as safe and reliable solutions, but in reality they represent a threat to the security and well-being of those who trust them. How do these fraudulent companies operate and what risks do they pose to Mexican society?

The appearance trap: how fake security companies operate

One of the most common tactics used by these fake companies is to create a facade of legitimacy. They use names, logos, and websites that are often difficult to distinguish from legitimate security companies. Additionally, they may offer tempting prices and promises of exceptional services to lure unsuspecting customers.

Once they have gained the trust of their victims, these fake security companies can act in a number of harmful ways. Some may provide faulty or low-quality security equipment that does not meet minimum protection standards. Others may even collaborate with criminal groups, providing insider information about their clients’ operations, further increasing the risk of theft or extortion.

The hidden dangers and consequences for society

According to this report from Reporte Índigo , Asume, the organization that brings together registered security companies, estimates that "nationally there are approximately "eight thousand private security companies , of which around 50 percent operate informally."

In Mexico City alone, it is estimated that they account for between 20 and 25 percent of the total of these "chafa" companies, which are then concentrated in Jalisco, EDOMEX and Nuevo León.

These small-time companies simply seek to close clients, collect their share, and "fulfill" their part by sending to the contracting events or properties, basically, anyone who accepts their meager salaries, with 24-hour shifts and without any protocol or prior preparation,

"These so-called security guards, who have not been subjected to any confidence control, psychometric test, training or a simple interview, constitute a danger for the hiring companies ," Asume states.

This is just the "light" side of the problem: collaboration between fake security companies and criminal groups constitutes a serious danger for the contractors, who have even suffered robberies or tips to the thieves by the same "security company" hired.

The importance of surveillance and regulation

With this complex landscape, it is crucial that you do your research before hiring a security service, and do not get carried away by "irresistible promotions." This includes thoroughly researching any company before hiring their services, checking their track record and reputation, and looking for reviews from previous clients.

Furthermore, it is the responsibility of government authorities to strengthen regulation and oversight of the security industry to prevent the proliferation of fraudulent companies. Stricter measures must be implemented to identify and sanction those who engage in deceptive practices, thus ensuring the safety and well-being of all Mexican citizens.

Ultimately, by working together to expose and combat fake security companies, we can build a safer and more secure environment for everyone in Mexico.
